Tra On, a district in Vinh Long province, grapples with a seasonal dilemma: saltwater intrusion from the nearby Cau Ke district during the dry season. Enter the Smart Sluice Gate, a student-developed marvel designed to combat these challenges.
The Smart Sluice Gate utilizes a network of sensors to act as its eyes and ears. A TDS sensor monitors salinity, while ultrasonic sensors track water levels inside and outside the gate. This real-time data feeds into an ESP32 microcontroller, the system’s brain. The microcontroller analyzes the data and triggers actions based on pre-set thresholds. Solar panels and a battery keep the system running. The panels generate electricity stored in the battery for nighttime or power outages, ensuring uninterrupted operation. The system sets salinity and water level thresholds. Based on these parameters, it takes specific actions:
Saltwater intrusion: The gate closes to prevent saline water from entering. Pumps remain inactive.
Water Level Management:
- Low water: The system checks external water levels. The gate opens or closes accordingly, and Pump 2 activates if needed to draw in water.
- High water: Pump 1 removes excess water or the gate opens depending on external water levels.
This setup effectively manages water levels and salinity to protect agricultural lands from saltwater intrusion and water shortages during the dry season.
