Flood and landslide early warning system

Instructed by: Ha Phuong Lan, IT teacher
Developed by: Ha Thu Huong (12 years old)
School: Na Phon Secondary School, Hoa Binh Province

Ha Thu Huong, a 12-year-old student in Hoa Binh Province, has developed a flood and landslide early warning system to address the safety risks posed by overflowing streams and unstable slopes in her community. The innovative system uses a series of lights and barriers to warn residents of potential dangers:

Green light: indicates normal water flow, signalling safe passage.
Flashing yellow light: Advises caution as water flow reaches 1.5 times the normal level.
Continuous yellow light: warns of restricted passage when water flow reaches twice the normal level.
Red light with closed barriers: indicates imminent danger when water flow exceeds three times normal level. Barriers automatically close to prevent crossings, reopening when water levels recede.

This project demonstrates the thoughtfulness and initiative of this young student in addressing a critical safety issue in her community. The flood and landslide early warning system has the potential to protect lives and property by enabling residents to make informed decisions during periods of heavy rain and potential flooding.
